Blakely Harbor, Bainbridge Island, WA
This is a consistent guest favorite. About a 1-hour sail from Serafina’s home port, Blakely Harbor is a very well protected inlet on the south end of Bainbridge Island. It offers sweeping views of downtown Seattle and Mount Rainier, especially at sunrise. Private and secluded, it offers abundant wildlife including bald eagles, seals, porpoises, and many other sea birds and fish.
Blakely Rock stands guard off the harbour entrance with its white four-second light flashing the rock’s presence to mariners. Blakely Harbor is a residential harbour with homes and the largest undeveloped waterfront area on Bainbridge Island.
In 1841, Lieutenant Wilkes named the quiet harbour in remembrance of Captain Johnson Blakely; he and his ship were lost at sea during the war of 1812.
The view from inside the harbour is spectacular. Across the blue waters of Puget Sound, the downtown Seattle skyline rises above Elliott Bay. The skyline glows at sunset with the reflection of the setting sun on the buildings and at night the lights of Seattle appear to twinkle. We enjoy Blakely Harbor’s contented ambiance, possibly because it’s so quiet and peaceful.
If you like to kayak ashore and explore, you’ll love Blakely Harbor. The entire head of the harbour, 40 acres, is a park. Explore the beaches, tide pools and the remains of the turn of the century Port Blakely Mill. The mill was once the world’s largest lumber mill. Relics of the huge old mill, remnants of old wharves, stub pilings and the remains of a millpond dam can be found in the park. Trails fan out through the park. It’s a delightful place.

Gig Harbor, WA
This is one of the most perfectly protected harbors in the Puget Sound, and one of the most charming towns. It’s a 4- to 5-hour sail from Seattle, and is best enjoyed with a 1½ or 2 day charter to avoid rushing. There is plenty of good overnight anchorage in the harbor, and if interested, we could pull along side a dock and venture into town. The town’s village-like commercial streets are lined with shops, galleries, and restaurants. At least two shops in town serve enormous ice cream cones and have chairs out front to take in the views. Several good restaurants from casual to elegant. On the casual side, we can even pull up to Tides Tavern where they will come take our order from the boat, and deliver the meal dockside.
